Tour Details

This 7-day wildlife immersion is just sufficient to witness the great wildebeest calving migration safari. This tour has been designed specifically to focus on following the migration trail during calving from December to April. The areas to be covered are Lake Ndutu and the Southern and Central areas of Serengeti National Park where majority of the wildebeest are usually found. A visit to the world-famous Ngorongoro Crater is part of this safari as well.

What to Expect

There is something truly remarkable about the mass calving of wildebeest between late January and early March. Within a matter of weeks, most female wildebeest drop their calves in a synchronized birthing that sees the Serengeti’s southern plains filled with over 400 000 young. Estimates are that 8 000 wildebeest are born a day – that is 300 every hour! While lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena and wild dog certainly eat their fill of these gangly baby gnus, the synchronized calving is an effective survival mechanism for the species: there is simply too much food for the predators to consume.

The wildebeest congregate in the Southern Serengeti Plains– the Ndutu Area and the northern area of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA). They are attracted by the abundant fresh grass on the fertile plains and the calcium in the soil, which is essential for growth and is transferred to the calves through the mother’s milk. Between late January and mid-March, over 80% of fertile female wildebeest drop their calves within a few weeks of one another. Over 400000 tiny wildebeest dot the plains and the predators swoop in to feast on the easy prey. Wildebeest still occupy the southern area of Serengeti National Park, but are preparing to move north as the plains dry out

Day 4Ngorongoro Conservation (Ndutu) Area-Full day

Another day in Ndutu full day game viewing.Ndutu can be considered in many respects as a continuation of the endless plains of the southern Serengeti. But as it actually lies in part within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, there is the possibility – ground conditions permitting – to go ‘off-road’ which is permissible here. A characteristic feature of this area is the collection of small, salty, lakes, whose water allows wildlife to exist here throughout the year. Among the most important of the water courses are Lake Masek, which is comparatively deep and thus remains more or less unchanged throughout the year. Lake Ndutu, nearby, is shallower and varies greatly according to the seasons, fed by a combination of rainfall, springs and rivers. At this time of the year, Ndutu is one of the best places to see migrating herds who seek out the short, nutritious grass and choose this area to give birth. The richness of the vegetation gives them the best chance of survival, but with predators everywhere, survival is by no means guaranteed.
