🌍 Bird Watching Destinations in Tanzania

Arusha National Park

Flamingos are common at Momella Lakes, although birdlife on these lakes varies seasonally. From October to April, the lakes are populated by waterfowl from Europe, and for the rest of the year, the resident birds such as Grebes, Pochards, Eagles, and Geese dominate the lakes. During the evening, you may even have the chance to see the Martial Eagle.

Lake Manyara National Park

More than 300 bird species have been recorded within the park. These include Eurasian migrant birds, raptors, acacia-associated birds, and three species endemic to Tanzania: Ashy Starling, Rufous-Tailed Weaver, and Black-Collared Lovebird. Lake Manyara and Lake Natron also provide excellent opportunities to see Flamingos, which gather in flocks of tens of thousands, or even several hundred thousand, along the shore. Lake Natron is the breeding ground for Flamingos, and Lake Manyara, along with Lake Nakuru in Kenya, is their feeding ground.

Tarangire National Park

Tarangire is one of the most wildlife-diverse national parks in East Africa, offering excellent bird watching opportunities. The park is particularly known for its sightings of raptors, and even those not typically interested in birdwatching will be awestruck by the sheer number of birds, especially the striking air predators. Commonly seen raptors in the park include the Martial Eagles, Bateleur Eagles, Long-Crested Eagles, Spotted Eagle Owls, Fish Eagles, and Tawny Eagles.

Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Thanks to its soda lakes, the crater provides a breeding ground for Flamingos, Crowned Cranes, and other water birds such as waders, ducks, and herons. It is also a great place to see striking ground birds such as the Kori Bustard, which is considered the world’s heaviest flying bird. During the rainy season, you’re more likely to see Ostriches and migrant storks here than at any other time. Birds of prey commonly seen in Ngorongoro include the Augur Buzzard and the Long-Crested Eagle. Other smaller birds have also been recorded in the area.

Serengeti National Park

In the Serengeti, Ostriches are common. This open grassland supports a variety of birds, including the Kori Bustard, Larks, Finches, and Raptors. The park is home to the magnificent Lilac-Breasted Roller and three endemic species of Tanzania: Fischer’s Lovebird, Grey-Rumped Spur Fowl, and the Babbler-like Rufous-Tailed Weaver.

Tanzania offers an incredible variety of bird species and world-class conditions for all bird lovers. Whether you are an experienced birdwatcher or just want to enjoy nature, bird watching in Tanzania is an unforgettable adventure that you can experience with us.
